| The library in Bunclody opened on Monday 11th June
2007. Members of the public who visited this week were delighted with the expanded
services and opening hours. The library is situated in the Millrace Hotel complex beside
ONeill's Jewellers in the town. Many people browsed through the stock and borrowed
the brand new books, talking books, music cds and language
courses. The 10 internet PC's available free
of charge were a big hit with customers.
Children were enthralled by the mural in the junior library which depicts agricultural
scenes around Bunclody. A weekly story-time for parents and young children and summer
activities for school-going children will begin over the next few weeks.
The large Polish community in the area is being served by a collection of fiction and
non-fiction books in Polish as well as Polish childrens books.
Booking has already begun for learning programmes and internet familiarisation sessions

At The
Foot of Mount Leinster
Traditional Singing Initiative
Call for Participants!
Traditional singer Aileen Lambert would like to invite you to a
Traditional Singing Session and Project Information Session in
Bunclody
Library on Thursday February 2nd at 7.00. Come along and hear a few
songs and Aileen will provide more details on an upcoming
Traditional
Singing project which you may be interested in getting involved in.
The
session will be followed by tea and coffee and all are welcome.
At the Foot of Mount Leinster is a traditional singing initiative
devised and facilitated by traditional singer Aileen Lambert. A
series
of workshops will take place in Bunclody Library from February to
May
for children, young people and adults. Monthly Open House Singing
Sessions will also be open to the public who will be invited to come
along and hear a range of traditional songs and singers, and sing a
song
themselves should they so choose.
Children from 4th - 6th class are invited to take part in the series
of
six traditional song workshops which will begin on February 2nd.
Participants will be introduced to a broad repertoire of traditional
songs: love songs, working songs, songs of war and songs of complete
nonsense! Discussion will revolve around lyrics, stories, and
background
to the songs. A number of songs are also accompanied by actions, and
are
guaranteed to have everyone singing at the top of their voices!
This is also a great opportunity for young people between the ages
of
thirteen and eighteen with an interest in traditional song. Aileen
hopes
to attract 4-5 young people who are interested in learning more
about
traditional song and finding songs that they would like to sing,
exploring various styles and types of songs from tragic love songs,
to
murder ballads to comic songs. If you think you might be interested
give
Aileen a call for a chat and more information.
For those adults who like traditional singing and sing a few songs,
but
are always meaning to learn another - this is for you! There exists
a
wonderful wealth of traditional songs, singers, and styles which get
little exposure and airplay, except on specialist programmes. Aileen
will help you to find and learn new songs to your liking based on
the
types of songs you like to sing, and topics you are interested in.
The
workshops will provide an informal relaxed atmosphere to discuss
songs
with other participants and listen to various recordings of singers
and
songs. Workshops will take place in Bunclody Library on a number of
dates (Thursday evenings) from February to June, giving you plenty
of
time to learn a few new songs!
A Monthly Open House Singing Session, which will provide a platform
for
participants to perform, and for the general public to come along
and
listen, or participate, will be held from March to June.
The project will be documented throughout and a project website will
feature details of the Singing Sessions, individual research, video
and
photos of the project.
To get a better of idea of what might be in store for you should you
sign up for this project, Aileen is hosting a Traditional Singing
and
Information Session in Bunclody Library on Thursday February 2nd at
7.00. Come along and hear a few songs and Aileen will provide more
details on the project, followed by tea and coffee. All are welcome.
