The Deep End God the Seducer
The amazingly popular film Into Great Silence - the one about the Grande Chartreuse in
the French Alps - has the first verse of todays First Reading (Jer 20:7-9) as a
recurring refrain: O Lord, you have seduced me and I let myself be seduced. It
seems to be the only explanation for someone to embrace so strict a lifestyle: silent,
celibate, solitary and frugal. But what a way to talk about God! And what a way for
Gods word to talk about God! It has an intensity to it thats almost palpable.
Only someone very close to God would use such language. Only a God very close to that
person would allow it.
How many people get so close to God that they can speak like that about, and to, God?
In those words lie a passionate history, a complex relationship, and an intense hunger.
Only someone with depth, passion and commitment could speak like that to God. Only someone
struggling with Gods approaches, doing all they can to resist them but knowing that
they cant, and in their heart of hearts admitting to themselves that they dont
really want to resist them could use such language convincingly.
Does this in any way reflect our experience of dealing with God? Do we struggle with
God? Do we resist Gods advances? Have we felt Gods seduction? Have we
succumbed to Gods will?
If it doesnt mirror our experience, if we havent had the struggle, felt the
seduction, discovered Gods will then we should pray that we do. Time is short.
