Who were the Evangelists?
The Four Evangelists
St. Matthew : A Galilean, called Levi by John and Luke and the son of Alphaeus by Mark,
a tax collector. According to various accounts, he preached the Gospel in Judea, Ethiopia,
Persia and Parthia and was Martyred. The emblem of the "Divine Man was assigned to
St. Matthew in ancient times because his gospel teaches us about the human nature of
Christ. A gold angel on a red field.
St. Mark : A cousin of Barnabas and member of the first Christian community in
Jerusalem; a missionary companion of Paul and Barnabas, then of Peter, author of the
Gospel which bears his name; according to legend, founded the Church in Alexandria, was
bishop there and was martyred in the streets of the city. The winged lion , ancient symbol
of St. Mark, refers to his Gospel, which informs us of the royal dignity of Christ.
St. Luke: A Greek convert to the Christian community, called "our most dear
physician" by Paul, of whom he was a missionary companion; author of the third
Gospel, and Acts of the Apostles; the place - Achaia, Bithynia, Egypt - and the
circumstances of his death are not certain; in art, the winged ox , assigned to St. Luke
is a reference to his Gospel, which deals with the sacrificial aspects of Christs
life.
St. John: A Galilean, son of Zebedee, a brother of James the Greater ( with whom he was
called a " Son of Thunder"), a fisherman, probably a disciple of John the
Baptist, one of the Evangelists, called the "Beloved Disciple"; with Peter and
James the Greater, witnessed the raising of Jairus daughter to life, the
transfiguration, the agony of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemani; Mary was commended to his
special care by Christ; the fourth Gospel, theree Catholic Epistles and Revelation bear
his name; according to various accounts, died a natural death about 100; in art, the
ancient symbol of a rising eagle is said to have been assigned to St. John because his
gaze pierced further into the mysteries of Heaven than any other man.
