Bunclody ICA - New members needed

It is 70 years since ICA was started in Bunclody. The guild has always been very active in the parish for all those years. We want to keep that tradition alive. But, due in no small way to Covid 19 and the demographic ageing of our members, we are desperately looking for new members to join our guild. We meet once a month and have a guest speaker. Sometimes have various crafts, etc at our meeting. We also meet once a month for coffee and chat in local restaurant. Sadly, if we do not get new members, we may have to close the guild. If you have 2 hours to spare, once a month, and to keep the guild open, which was kept going by so many wonderful women in the past.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Jesus comes to the terrain of Tyre and Sidon. Both are outside the Promised Land of the people of God, of the territory of Israel. Jesus was confronted by one of the old stock, a Canaanite woman, who was an inhabitant of the country before the Jews or Israelites arrived. Jesus did not treat her with initial courtesy. He emphasized that his mission was to the lost sheep of the House of Israel. “It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the house dogs” The woman replied with great courage, “Even the house dogs can eat the scraps that fall from the master’s table.” Jesus, having tested her faith and trust complemented her saying “Woman, you have great faith, Let your wish be granted.”

The gospel raises the whole issue of difference. The old Canaanites, the original inhabitants of the land were overrun by the Israelite conquest. They were always second class citizens. It looked for a moment that Jesus was going along with the current belief and culture. He highlights that what matters in the long run is faith.

As Christians we belong to a faith community. A basic mark of our community should be respect for all and an emphasis on equality. Each of us is called on to support one another, encourage each other and build an atmosphere of harmony, cooperation and genuine self-giving love. It is important that we look at our own parish and Christian community to discover to what extent our community is imbued with the Christian spirit.

THE HOOK OF FAITH THIS WEEK

George O’Connor was one of the finest hurlers Wexford ever produced. In this week’s interview, he talks about success, failure, mental health and the importance of faith. We have a homily for the Twentieth Sunday of Ordinary Time where Jesus expands his own circle of followers to show how his saving love is meant for all and not just some. We have articles by Sean Byrne, Sean O’Leary and a video talk by Bishop Robert Barron from World Youth Day. We have another video interview on why thinking about our own death is a good thing and a talk by an expert on catechesis in contemporary society. Finally, a series of inspiring thoughts from the pen of Gorey’s Michael Dwyer. Check out these and other resources available at www.thehookoffaith.com

  • Reaching out the hand of welcome to all who do not belong to our faith and worshipping community.
