Thought for the Week

This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you. No one can have greater love than to lay down his life for his friends. (Jn. 15:12). These are words from Sunday’s gospel. They are the very heart of the Christian message. It carries two basic points. Firstly we have been loved by Christ who shows to us, in the down to earth experience of his death, that God loves us. His love for us as a human being conveys God’s love to us. “For this is how God loved the world, he gave his only Son.” (Jn. 3:15). God has lavished his love on us, called us his children, because as human beings we mean everything to him. We possess extraordinary dignity because each of us has been loved by God, loved into existence and loved into relationship with himself.

Jesus calls on us to reflect his love in our own lives. Like himself, we give the best of ourselves on behalf of each other. This basic message has not been improved on in the course of history. There is only one problem with the Christian message. It has not been explored and lived.
