World Youth Day

World Youth Day is firmly established as one of the great legacies of Pope John Paul 11 to the church and to young people. The preparations are well under way for the next World Youth Day in Sydney from July 15-20 in 2008. Bishop Denis Brennan is delighted that young adult  pilgrims from, virtually, every parish in this diocese will accompany him to this universal youth pilgrimage and festival of faith, which will be attended by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. Our Bishop Denis is issuing a letter to be read out in all churches in the diocese on the next weekend January 19th/20th 2008 authorising a collection to be taken, in aid of World Youth Day, in every parish and curacy on the weekend January 26th/27th.

TEDDIES FOR TRAGEDIES

Teddy Bears or soft toys needed. Must be clean and in good condition and suitable for babies or young children. Teddies can be knitted also. Knitting instructions available in the Parish office if anybody is interested in knitting teddy bears. Contact: 053 9376190

Doctors who treat children in the third world countries are asking for them, as they have found that children who have their own teddies to cuddle in their cots get better quicker than those who don’t have one. Each child keeps his own teddy and can take it home. So the doctors need a continual supply.

Anybody who has teddy bears to donate to sick children contact the parish office @053 9376190 and arrangements can be made to pass them on to the collectors.

Who? Me!

Asking the right question is as important as getting the right answer. It means we’re on the right track to self-understanding. We’re clued in to life. We’re focused on the present but with our sights on the future too. But, not everybody is. Those who never ask that all-important question ‘who am I?’ can’t possibly be. As human beings we don’t just walk around with mystery every day. We are mystery walking around! The answer to the question, ‘who am I?’ is not my name. It has nothing to do with my name. I can change that if I wish. But I can’t change my who no matter how much I might wish to do so because that is immutable before God.

So, I need to meet that who, to discover what makes me, me. Is it status, success, money, ability, intelligence? These play their part in forming me, as do failures, limitations and fears, but there’s more to me than all of those put together.

I need to ask that all-important question, ‘who am I?’ and wait patiently until I hear the answer I crave; until in sheer disbelief I hear the words spoken to Jesus in today’s gospel (Mt 3:17): you are my beloved son/daughter in whom I am well pleased.
