Prayer for Priests

"You came from among us to be, for us, one who serves. We thank you for ministering Christ to us and helping us minister Christ to each other. We are grateful for the many gifts you bring to our community: for drawing us together in worship, for visiting us in our homes, for comforting us in sickness, for showing us compassion, for blessing our marriage, for baptising our children, for confirming us in our calling, for supporting us in bereavement, for helping us to grow in faith, for encouraging us to take the initiative, for helping the whole community realise God’s presence among us.

For our part, we pray that we may always be attentive to your needs and never take you or others for granted. You, like us, need friendship and love, welcome and a sense of belonging, kind words and acts of thoughtfulness. We pray, also, for the priests who have wounded priesthood. May we be willing to forgive and may they be open to healing. Let us support one another during times of crisis.

God our Father, we ask you to bless our Priests and to confirm them in their calling. Give them the gifts they need to respond with generosity and a joyful heart. We offer this prayer for our priest, Who is our brother and friend, Amen.

Prayer for Exams

"O God of Wisdom, I thank you for the knowledge gained and the learning experiences I have received these past number of years. I come to you this day and I ask you to illuminate my mind and heart. Let your Holy Spirit be with me as I prepare for exams, guiding my studies, and giving me insight so that I can perform to the best of my ability. Please grant me the strength to handle the pressure of these final days, the confidence to feel secure in my knowledge, and the ability to keep an appropriate perspective through it all. Help me to keep in mind what is truly important, even as I focus my time and energy on these tests in the immediate future.

The Deep end * Keeping Low Company

About forty years ago I read The Two-Edged Sword by the Jesuit biblical scholar John l McKenzie. At this remove I can recall only one sentence from it. One that’s still as sharp today as the two-edged sword he was writing about then. It still penetrates deeply, and pains. That sentence reads: ‘Jesus was often accused of keeping low company. Many of his followers, however, seem to have risen above that criticism.’ Ouch!

Today’s Gospel (Matt 9:9-13) puts me in mind of it. ‘I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.’ One way of knowing that it’s God word we’re hearing and not our own, is when it’s difficult to take. We hear what the word is saying, but don’t like it. We try to explain it away, water it down, or ignore it - but can’t. It won’t go away - now, or ever. It packs the same punch forty years down the line.

When that word penetrates so does God’s Spirit, directing it, planting it, nurturing it. It changes us when we trust it. Matthew trusted it as he heard Jesus call: ‘Follow me’. And, it changed him . From stagnating at a tax booth he became energized to journey into the unknown.

That’s another way of Knowing that it’s God’s word we hear: it’s open-ended . It can take us anywhere especially to places we would never dream of going on our own.
