Vocations Discernment Day

In an ordination homily during the summer, Archbishop Francis Duffy said that 'There has never been a better time to be a diocesan priest in Ireland'. We could ask the question 'why?' This question and more will be explored in a 'Vocations Discernment Day' taking place on Saturday 12th October at University College Dublin, from 11am to 5pm. It is a chance for people who are discerning their futures to know more about what the life of a priest entails. It is a chance to meet with priests and seminarians who will be present to talk about this question together. The venue of UCD is significant for it is a place where thousands of young people discern their futures in the fields of employment and education. To know more, please see the poster in the Church and go directly to www.vocations.ie/ exploring to book a place. Alternatively, you can make con-tact with Fr Billy Swan at billyswan68@hotmail.com

We need more volunteer drivers to be able to deliver hot meals to the growing number of people in our community who request the service. Each Sunday evening, drivers commit to approx. one hour drive on one of the days, for the forthcoming week via a WhatsApp group - not an arduous commitment. If you think you can spare an hour on an intermittent basis, please contact Brigid on 0872699411 to discuss. Thank You.

Bunclody ICA - New members needed

It is 70 years since ICA was started in Bunclody. The guild has always been very active in the parish for all those years. We want to keep that tradition alive. But, due in no small way to Covid 19 and the demographic ageing of our members, we are desperately looking for new members to join our guild. We meet once a month and have a guest speaker. Sometimes have various crafts, etc at our meeting. We also meet once a month for coffee and chat in local restaurant. Sadly, if we do not get new members, we may have to close the guild. If you have 2 hours to spare, once a month, and to keep the guild open, which was kept going by so many wonderful women in the past.

Please phone 087 2805426 or 086 8135587

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Marriages can break down, but in this story Jesus appears as the wise person urging people to seek first the original harmony where possible, rather than seek escape routes when difficulties arise. When have you found that, in marriage or in other relationships, the bonds have strengthened when you have been prepared to work through difficulties?

There are other things that we needlessly and wrongly put in opposition: young and old, male and female, people from different cultures, body and soul. Perhaps at times you have discovered the advantages of exploring the richness in combining such apparently exclusive opposites. The children in the second story can be taken as representing any group of ‘little ones’ whose opinion we may be inclined to dismiss. When have you found that you have been taught an important lesson about life, about love, or about faith by people whose views you had been inclined to dismiss?

Children’s curiosity and questioning can also give us a lesson. Their desire to know and understand the world around them can serve as an inspiration for us and we seek an ever deeper understanding and appreciation of how our faith can enrich our lives.

THE HOOK OF FAITH THIS WEEK

Having marked the ‘International Day of Non-Violence’ on 2nd October, an article offers practical ways of tack-ling the scourge of violence against women. As the sec-ond ‘Synod on Synodality’ begins in Rome, we share opening meditations by Pope Francis and Fr Timothy Radcliff OP. ‘Pilgrims of Hope’ is the official hymn for the forthcoming Jubilee year 2025 that we look forward to. We offer an article on St John Henry Newman for his feast day on Wednesday 9th October and resources for ‘Children’s Day of Mission’ that takes place on

Friday 11th. We have a homily for the Twenty-Seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time that focuses on marriage and offer newsletter resources from Pope Francis’ ‘The Joy of Love’. Finally, an article debunks the myth of vast Vatican wealth – something that is often portrayed as an obstacle to faith.

Check out these and other resources available at www.thehookoffaith.com
