Bunclody ICA - New members needed

It is 70 years since ICA was started in Bunclody. The guild has always been very active in the parish for all those years. We want to keep that tradition alive. But, due in no small way to Covid 19 and the demographic ageing of our members, we are desperately looking for new members to join our guild. We meet once a month and have a guest speaker. Sometimes have various crafts, etc at our meeting. We also meet once a month for coffee and chat in local restaurant. Sadly, if we do not get new members, we may have to close the guild. If you have 2 hours to spare, once a month, and to keep the guild open, which was kept going by so many wonderful women in the past.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

On Sunday we begin another year for our church. It is the First Sunday of Advent. It represents the period of waiting and longing for a Saviour that people hoped for over the years. The people of the Old Testament, especially in the couple of centuries before the Birth of Jesus had looked forward to a coming Messiah. There was a widespread belief that he would be a descendant of David, the second ad greatest king of the people of God. During advent we celebrate the period of expectation and waiting. But we are waiting for Christmas and the celebration of the birth of Jesus who was God incarnate in a human person, whose purpose was to open up new possibilities for human kind. He brought a new approach to life which we can take hold of and make our own and so live an authentic and genuine life in this world with the prospect of everlasting life with God beyond this world.

We live in strange times, For the past six weeks the commercial world was advertising and making preparations for good sales for months and weeks coming up to Christmas. We do not have to spend as much time in making preparation for Christmas. It is most important that we get our focus right. We celebrate the birth of a Saviour, one who gives us the grace and possibility of taking his life and example seriously and of adapting our lifestyle to be like his. During Advent it will be good to come to know Jesus better so that when the new year comes we gain the incentive to take him seriously and imitate his llfestyle to the very best of our ability. May we focus on Jesus during these few weeks of preparation and make sure that his teaching and life makes a deep impact on us.

THE HOOK OF FAITH THIS WEEK

Do you need as Saviour? Do we? Does the world? These are the questions that Advent raises because Christmas is about the birth of the Saviour. The homily for the First Sunday of Advent explores our need for saving and is accompanied by an article too. As COP28 is about to begin in Dubai, the significance of Pope Francis’ presence at this crucially important conference is assessed. We include the Pope’s prayer intention for December which is for people with disabilities. Philip Quirke offers a poem and a YouTube video features the faith journey through cancer of Mrs. Tammy Peterson, wife of famous psychologist Jordan Peterson. In the light of recent horrific attacks on women, we probe the question: ‘Is the sexual revolution making women feel less safe?’ Finally, as the Church celebrates the Feast of Mary’s Immaculate Conception, it invites all of us to see how God’s grace makes human lives beautiful. Check out these and other resources available at www.thehookoffaith.com
